A remarkable coating applied under water for an interesting project.

Transco had a problem with one of their gasholders in the North of England. The base of the holder is sealed by water.

This particular gasholder was old and some of the brickwork that holds the water seal in place had become porous just under the coping stone and two brick levels down. Transco were concerned about the effect on the environment should leaks occur. The gasholder has been out of service until this seal could be repaired.

They consulted us and we came up with the following solution to seal the sections where needed. In brief we came up with the following: High pressure Jet wash the surface with a biodegradable degreaser. Place a floating pontoon in the channel to stop debris falling in to it. Lightly shot blast the surface of the brickwork and coping stone to further remove surface contamination and give a strong mechanical key for the sealing system to be applied. Jet wash again in case of splash contamination.

Render the area with a special render mix.
Apply a water tolerant primer coat. Apply two coats of water tolerant and chemical resistant main coating with the topcoat in a grey colour to blend in with the body of the tank.

The work took four days to complete and apart from the last day it rained solidly throughout the whole project. The water tolerant coating was applied onto a surface wet with constant running water and the adhesion to the substrate was excellent.
