  Tannery Waste Water Tanks

A Tannery had a problem with three concrete tanks that they were using for the containment of process chemical waste products from their factory. Each tank, 80% of which was standing above ground level, was of vertical cylindrical design with funnel shaped floors sloping at 45o. The tanks were 11 m high and 8 m diameter. Built from reinforced concrete some 45 years ago, they had been lined with acid proof tiles. The walls of the tanks were approximately 30 cm thick and the problem was one of old age. The tannery was unable to fill the vessels more than 50-60% because the additional pressure from the product inside caused the tanks to move and crack. For this project we decided to use a chemical and abrasion resistant elastomeric lining material. The material that we chose had excellent resistance to the stated chemicals in use, it was highly abrasion resistant and could tolerate stretching and flexing of the vessels. (I am told by the manufacturer that the lining is tolerant to elongation to a factor of 400%). The tanks were first steam-cleaned and de-greased, then abrasive blast cleaned to produce a mechanical profile and to loosen any unsound substrate, then after careful vacuum cleaning, the new lining was sprayed on to a thickness of 1.5 – 2mm using plural feed airless hot paint spray.
