Replacing the tank would cost over £237,000

There was also a situation where access was too difficult to replace a damaged tank. The cost of replacing this hot water tank would have been around £13-14,000. However the greatest problem our client had was access. For this type of vessel, on-site fabrication was not possible and in order to replace the vessel as a whole item would have meant removing a section of the roof, cutting through three floors, moving plant and machinery and then finally replacing the tank. Total cost was estimated at being in excess of £237,000 at 1993 prices and exchange rates. Apart from the cost implication it was impossible for the brewery to do this as it would have meant shutting down completely vital sections of the brewery. We decided to reline the vessel, if we could find a suitable lining material. Although it was a difficult one we came up with a food grade lining that was tolerant to immersion conditions of boiling water and steam. Their engineering department prepared the vessel for us and the new lining was applied.
